Jayhawk Flex

Jayhawk Flex is the University of Kansas’ competency‑based education (CBE) program, designed to provide flexible, high‑quality graduate education for working adults. This page explains how financial aid works for Jayhawk Flex students, including how to apply, eligibility requirements, disbursement timing, and academic progress expectations.

Jayhawk Flex Academic Program Information

Types of Financial Aid Available for Jayhawk Flex

Federal Student Loans

  • To apply for a federal student loan, you must fill out a FAFSA
  • Eligible students may borrow federal unsubsidized student loans of up to $20,500 per year and will be split into three separate disbursements:
    • Fall: $6,834
    • Spring: $6,833
    • Summer: $6,833
  • To qualify, students must be enrolled full time (a minimum of 6 competencies) by the term’s enrollment deadline for financial aid:
    • Fall 2026 Enrollment Deadline Financial Aid: September 7, 2026
    • Spring 2027 Enrollment Deadline Financial Aid: February 1, 2027
    • Summer 2027 Enrollment Deadline Financial Aid: June 14, 2027
  • Competencies added after the eligibility deadline will not increase aid.
  • To remain eligible for federal student loans, students must be academically engaged during the entire term for which they received federal student loans. 

Private Student Loans

Students are welcome to apply for private student loans. More information on lenders can be found on our private loan lenders page.

Military and Employer Benefits

Some students may also be able to use military educational benefits or employer tuition benefits/reimbursement. Students using these types of resources should verify enrollment and billing requirements with their benefit provider. 

External / Outside Scholarships

Because of the low cost of the program, students are not eligible for KU grants or scholarships. However, outside/external scholarships are welcome. 

 

Financial Aid Disbursement

For students enrolled in a Jayhawk Flex program (CBE), financial aid will not disburse before the term begins. Jayhawk Flex students will receive their financial aid after the enrollment deadline for financial aid for each term. Financial aid will not disburse earlier than the published dates. Students not enrolled in at least 6 competencies before the disbursement date will not receive federal student loans for that term. 

Disbursement Dates:

  • Fall 2026: September 8, 2026
  • Spring 2027: February 2, 2027
  • Summer 2027: June 15, 2027
